Meet Sarah Palmer
As a graduate of Mount Royal University’s Journalism and Digital Media program, I’m an emerging multimedia journalist based in Calgary, Alta. With professional bylines and freelance experience, my work ranges from breaking news to long-form feature articles, covering topics such as civic politics, crime, and community events. I'm especially drawn to hyper-local, solutions-focused stories that uncover the trials and triumphs residents face, and I hope to pursue investigative journalism in the future.
Having first picked up a camera in high school, I have since expanded my digital skills to include videojournalism, audio production, graphic design, and data visualization.
While it might sound cliché, the fact that no two days look the same has kept my passion for journalism burning bright. I'm a self-proclaimed 'yes man' motivated by the challenge of learning something and meeting someone new, and that mindset has made me a versatile storyteller who's comfortable figuring things out on the fly.
I'll cut to the chase: Why am I pursuing journalism?
I'm a Gen Z sophomore to my core: I learned to type in computer labs equipped with Windows 8, but when it came time to apply these skills, it was on laptops that updated faster than lesson plans.
Somewhere between ditching my family's VHS collection and signing up for Snapchat, I noticed that misinformation could spread faster than facts. This frustrated me, and made me realize that I didn't just want to consume media — I wanted to question, verify, and improve it.
Luckily for me, this realization came as my time at high school faded into dusk. It was when I scoured post-secondary programs that I found out that this conviction had a name: journalism.
Having come of age in an era defined by technological whiplash makes me confident in my ability to tell stories across platforms in a rapidly evolving media landscape.
When I'm not chasing ledes, what am I doing?
My most notable personal interests go hand in hand: travelling and photography. Among visiting many Canadian provinces and American states, I've ventured internationally to Greece, England, and all over Mexico. Photographically, I've been shooting both mirrorless and DSLR cameras since 2018 and have recently developed an admiration for 35mm film after buying my first SLR, a 1976 Canon AE-1.
